| | Anyone Active in Iowa? < on 6/18/2010 11:08 PM >
| | | After taking over a year off of UE (I broke both my ankles) I've returned and I'm seeing that Iowa appears to have faded away for explorers. Is there anyone still here with anywhere decent to go? Is there anyone looking for someone to go with?

| | | LOL. I'm from Dubuque, Iowa. I moved up to Minneapolis back in December. The Twin Cities have that effect on us Iowa explorers. There are still some around, if you know where to look, but they are few and spread all across the state. Where in Iowa are you from???

| | | I'm from Waterloo, but I moved to Des Moines a month ago. I was hoping to get some exploring done around here, but I'm finding it tough. Most of the people I talk to around here (friends of friends and such) say they don't really know of anywhere. Most commonly I hear "well there were some places, but they tore them down." Right now it's looking like I'll simply be driving all the roads out of town hoping to find something. And it'll probably be a fairly lonely search.

There's stuff in Des Moines, but you have to look. There's one that's a fairly easy and big abandonment close to downtown, but it's guarded 24-7. The guard rarely leaves his shack though. There are several others that are a lot harder to get into in the Des Moines area, but are pretty empty on the inside and generally uninteresting. It's high-water right now, so the drains are best avoided.
In order to use your head, you have to go out of your mind. |

| | | There are a few 8+ story buildings in down town DM that are empty. Try looking near this: "There's one that's a fairly easy and big abandonment close to downtown, but it's guarded 24-7. The guard rarely leaves his shack though." and then look for the tall parking garage near the travelers building. Go up to the top and look around you should see the building im talking about. That one is huge. If you like the whole roof access and/or photography thing, you should be about to find some fun stuff in DM... I'm from DM but am out in CO right now.

Read the PDF, it mentions ArcView on page 18. It's a cartography application that allows you to read the database. Many governmental entities provide free access to their databases. Though they often require you to send a written request and respond with a DVD in the mail.

I am also one of said explorers. I lived in Waterloo, actually. Used to explore regularly all over the state - Waterloo, Dubuque, Des Moines, Sioux City, Ames, Ottumwa, Quad Cities, and can't forget one of my favorite mystery towns, Fort Dodge. There's still a dodgy mine that needs explored there... Anyway, I used to know the state inside out and upside down, but my info is 5-10 years dated. Which is fine for underground, as underground rarely changes, but the list of explorable abandonments these days is undoubtedly very different than when I was a resident. Someday I hope to make an Iowa weekend UE trip or two. Probably Fort Dodge, among other places. Not sure when though, as I've been focusing on digging a 3D maze of tunnels in the sandstone, and am trying to get it done within 2 years. Sadly, since I started digging, I rarely even see my local exploring friends, much less those from out of town... But it'll all be worth it when the maze and the party room are finished!!!
I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird. Iowa is Minnesota's bitch. There's an art to pooping. |

I'd be interested to know what techniques and tools you've found to be the most and least efficient.

That's about what we did last weekend. Actually, had a bunch of fun. Found a local brewery, a few caves, family style americana restaurants, some derp, a drain, read country singles magazine, all mixed in with a little camping. I'd go back for some Iowa RurEX anytime.
