I was about to roadtrip down here . I was under the impression that the Poconos was the next center for abandoned hotels ala the Catskills.
From some other forums I frequent, it sounded like Mt Airy had hone downhill bigtime like the Pines and I expected to see new improvements masking an aging hotel trying to survive.
But this place is freaking nice!
I too remember the TV ads, with the heart shaped tubs.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

It seems as though it's in its infancy of the same fate, but definately on it's way down - the hot tubs don't impress anymore!
I don't really know what the inside looks like, I think it's semi-nice, but definately dated - I don't know if it's freaking nice, the lighting was just good...with time and vandals it will likely go down with other outdated mountain resorts.
I still want in - I've gotta see it now!

Mount Airy is up for sale. From what I've heard if they don't find a buyer it's going to be raized and turned into apartments. Because of the sale price they've got some pretty impressive security measures. Active alarms, cameras that still function in a few places and 24hour security still. Even in the winter they keep tight tabs on the place.

It's nowhere near the decline that the Pines as suffered as it's only been closed a couple of years now.

All that security is no fun! How am I suppossed to get in there? Perhaps I should pose as a rich buyer and get a tour...

Me and Carrie actually tried that Biz hehe. Didn't work unfortunately. They're being really anal about the place. Then again the owners house which sits only a few hundred yards from the main lodge building is probably never going to re-open. Considering he killed himself in it.

It's a shame about the owner killing himself, I suppose that makes it unlikely it will be inhabited again any time soon. It's really unfortunate though, becasue that house was by far the coolest part we were able to see, straight out of 1967 - and the architecture seemed to mimic that of the Palace building next door.

I too have been concoting elaborate schemes to get in there legally, all seem unlikely - the place is sealed like fort knox.

Tell me about it...we've always thought that a backhoe would be needed to get inside. With all they have protecting the place it'll be at least a few more harsh winters before it's accessible. Even then I doubt it will be. They keep the place maintained fairly well.

Well, it's open now!!
Boards are down, doors are wide open everywhere. The mansion, the hotel, the houses on the property, all of the complex's of rooms, everything. There are alarms though - we set one off for sure, but seems like no one cares. The inside of the place is nasty - all the work they did helped I guess, but it's still badly deteriorated.
Go soon - from the looks of it, it will all be gone soon...
