Was a pretty cool thing to explore, hard to imagine this thing walking. The pictures just dont do it justice as far as size. Running across a bunch of vultures while exploring the thing wasnt very fun either...

This is most definitely a dragline. It has a Hendrix Bucket on it. Hendrix is the bane of my fucking existence right now. As of a month ago they have filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy...they aren't coming back. The company I work for is currently in the process of manufacturing the parts ourselves. I digress.

This is a model of BIG MUSKIE in my office along with some link belt and P&H cranes.

huh, i thought i commented.... oh well.

i stand corrected, http://en.wikipedi...Dragline_excavator

this is a drag line. i was going from memory as a small child in northern quebec visiting the coal mine with my dad. he told me that the machines were called drag line b/c they dragged the power supply lines behind them as well as the output lines for rock and coal.

and thanks for putting spaces in between the pics, so much better now!

They are actually called draglines because there are cables/chains that run from the bucket to the base of the machine. The machine uses the hoist rope at the top and throws the bucket out and uses the "drag chain" to pull it back in towards the machine. And there is where you get the term dragline.

Though, Cdevon, what you are talking about with the power supply is generally used for the very large machines. The largest dragline in the world was BIG MUSKIE and it had massive power cables like that because it was electric. The machine I was on is not electric and runs on fuel.

I like this. It took me forever but I think I know where it is. Looks like a great spot for long exposures. Is the mine that's nearby still in operation?

There's another huge one of these at a mine near Tatum, TX that I saw in operation a few years ago. It was at night and was pretty cool to watch with all the floodlights going. I'm not sure it's still there or if it's moved to another part of the quarry away from the road.

The only other similar machine I've ever seen was Big Brutus in Kansas enough years ago that I don't remember it very well.

i recall these machines to be very very very big. i dare say MUCH larger than the one in this thread. but maybe its cuz i was small... meh...

it was strange to read the book "Caines legacy" http://www.amazon....nada/dp/0969483805 and see pics of the town i used to live in that is now just a good place to hunt...

they (drag lines) were too costly to take apart and move/sell/scrap when the coal ran out so they just left them there to rust. i would shit large bricks to explore that small town and the mines not far from there...

edit: found drag line in the middle of nowhere... cant get link to paste... i am disappoint....

This is by far the best picture set I have ever seen on UER. Draglines are just so cool and I am green with envy. Certainly there is nothing that big here in Maine.

I did have a chance though to tour the biggest coal mine in North America when I worked for the railroad out west. We got a guided tour of the Black Thunder Mine in Wright Wyoming. The dragline bucket on that machine, at that time, was 230 cubic yards. It was an impressive machine, but of course we could not go on it because it was a working machine. I got lots of pictures of that trip, but that was back in per-digital days so I don't have ready access to the pictures in a digital format.

Again, thanks for the picture set.

Dude that is wicked cool! There's a smaller dragline, a Bucyrus-Monighan 10W, just west of campus up here. Was used in conjunction with a large gold dredge, which is floating in a pond right next to the crane. Abandoned mining stuff is always fun to explore.
