Tilbury Cement Factory: Seattle, WA

Did this one a few months ago. The factory was built in 1956 and has been sitting abandoned since the late 80's I think. It's owned by the city of Seattle now.

The building is pretty cool: silos, a small building on the back, a warehouse, and dock with an absolutely beautiful view of Mount Rainier. It's a great place to go explore and it's easy enough to get into, so no problems there. Since it's a busy area with other businesses around it, it's probably best to go early morning on a weekend or late at night (although be careful: read about the person living here).

Some old electrical control boxes are scattered around the property which are pretty fun to take pictures of.

All this is fun but be careful. While we were exploring, I noticed a small building in the warehouse on the side with a locked door. I've been in enough buildings to know that locked doors in places like this that are overrun with graffiti don't tend to be locked very long. I pushed on the door a bit and could see in. It was clearly someone's "home" - just then I saw a person jump to the side of the door, clearly getting in position in case I pushed through. We ran off. I'm not sure if the guy is still living there, but it's worth being careful.

1. From the outside

2. A little electrical box on the side of the main building

3. Cool little panel on the inside

4. More stuff that I don't know what it does

5. Box to control the Silos I'm guessing

6. A view of the street from inside the silo building

7. Graffiti in a few places

8. Bright red box out by the docks on the back

9. A shot of the silos and the staircase that goes up them. We didn't have time to go up.

10. First light on Rainier. Beautiful.

11. The backside of a electrical box on the side of the building with Rape Box painted on it. Cute.

12. More cool little panels that have long since been touched.

13. Going up the staircase in one of the silos.

14. This is on the 2nd floor of the silos.

15. First light coming in.

16. An observation booth on the 2nd floor with shattered glass.

17. Four pipes on one of the walls in the silo.

18. Gauge of some sort.

19. A bunch of these panels/lockers/boxes on the side of the main building.

20. Another silo shot along with part of the warehouse next to it.

Thanks for the feedback. Sham fake - hah, half the time I read the graffiti and I'm like... whhaaa??

I'm not much for exploring alone, and in this case that might have been good since somebody was living there. I don't remember the channels - do you you have a pic handy?

Ah yes, now I remember. Not sure what they're for either, but I'll go with your explanation

I've been by this location but never inside. Sounds like I'll have to now. Awesome shots. I also love that shot from the "operational" location.

Thinking of getting over to this spot Saturday morning. My main question being, is it a sketchy spot to check out alone? That'll more or less be the determining factor as to whether I get down there.

Nah....you should be fine. It's pretty open and clear. There is a guy who lives there, though....and he is a quiet one....so he can kinda startle you if you are not paying attention, but everything's pretty cool and calm there. Have fun.
