Tracking down the hobos in the woods

So, I've been hearing rumors that a certain little area of forest is home to one of the biggest concentrations of hobos in town, and I was looking at google maps and it makes sense. It's less than a 10 minute walk to two different soup kitchens, 3 churches are nearby, and it's within spitting distance of the Texas Fairgrounds, which means the forest has quick access to food, water, and out-of-towners to bum off of. I decided to go and have a look-see.

1. Driving in, behind some businesses and next to the fairground, I come across the first possible evidence of hobos.

2. This looks like a good place to start. On the left is a catering company that often gives out leftovers to the homeless, and to the right is the forest in question.

3. It's pretty thick and oddly enough there is ancient barbed wires all over, in no logical order, it's not fencing anything off, there are just several, at least 6, old fences running around through the forest.

4. In a little clearing, an old and decomposing mattress.

5. Suddenly, a bike and lots of trash, and TONS of plastic tarps for shielding from the rain. In the distance, I can hear voices.

6. A little further in, another matress.

7. Further in. Lots of trash and tarps, can clearly hear voices all around me.

8. These look like they came out of a tour bus and re-purposed as a bed. Nearby was a small pile of toiletries and food.

9. An older camp, there's a deflated air mattress and some odds and ends.

10. Another old camp. Looks like two people at least camped here.

11. Suddenly, success!

These guys were really quite pleasant. I stayed and chatted with them for about 10 minutes. The guy in the middle was very friendly and says he has been living in that clearing for quite awhile, note the territorial graffiti on the tree behind him. The guy on the right never woke up while I was there, and the guy on the left was hostile and uncomfortable at first but when he found out I wasn't a cop or someone trying to out them he turned friendly. Anyway, onward!

12. Past the last camp it opens up a bit

13. And there is a little creek

14. Can't really tell but there was a VERY smelly hobo wrapped up in here.

15. And his music?

16. Ouch. And we're done.

We can all learn something from the homeless.

We'll need their skills after the world ending, zombie apocalypse and 90% of the humans are either dead or... undead... No industry ,no rule of law. Just surviving on your wits and what you can find.

... I really need to stop playing Fallout3....... but I can't!

There was the three in the clearing, the guy wrapped up in the foam, and at least 7-8 others deeper in the woods that I didn't go meet and greet because the forest was thick enough that should I need to get out in a hurry I wouldn't be able to.

this really is a most awesome thread,

you followed a trail of old mattresses into the woods, the ones with the highest concentration of hobos..

.. and you found 3!

pics are nice but unless you come back with their left ears on a string, theres no bounty for you!

Go back for some ears Capt.

Years ago, a girl I was dating had a hunter for a father. He took me in the garage and showed me a large jar of testicles that he'd removed from, Elk, Sheep, Boar, Goats, and whatever else.

He told me there would always be room in that jar for a couple more......

I've always been fascinated with the idea that someone has used an abandoned building as a home and then moved onward. It is much like looking through an abandoned house with items left from 30 years ago. "Why did the person leave", "where are they now?" - if those questions are brought to mind, it's been a good exploration.

As for hobos, those same questions come to mind... what brought them here, how long did they stay and where did they go. So far I've never found an actual hobo, only what they've left behind.

These guys where really together and all-there as far as the hobos I've met go. I wonder the same thing, and I'm really considering going back with a pizza and some beer and asking them if they'd be willing to let me interview them on camera in return for the food and beer.

This made me laugh so hard. That's the scariest, best, most creative threat ever. Lets hope it ended well.

I would love to see this, but would it not offend them for you to do this? For bribery and patronizing them?

I bet they'd like the pizza, beer, and conversation.......But thats just my guess.

There's a large hobo camp near my house. It's under the freeway and has a slow moving stream or creek going thru. I hear they've tapped into electricity, and have showers set up.

Great thread, but I don't know if I would call them hobos.

A hobo is a migratory worker or homeless vagabond, often penniless. The term originated in the Western—probably Northwestern—United States during the last decade of the 19th century. Unlike tramps, who work only when they are forced to, and bums, who do not work at all, hobos are workers who wander

Still, absolutely amazing to read!

Exploring is like tattoos... They stopped being cool in 2005

No. Most hobos I meet love to tell their story. It's a moment of limelight in a life where the entire world and society around you thinks you're disgusting.
