Researching Tunnels

I have no problem researching buildings, caves, etc that I hear about but how do I find more information on tunnels?

I was recently told about a supposed tunnel used to bring prisoners to Ft. Leavenworth disciplinary barracks. It seems as though anytime you mention urban exploring though someone knows of some "secret" location that's rumored to be super amazing, super old and nobody knows about it. So don't know how accurate this is and I don't know why they would have been built for that purpose.

Do any of you have any advice on where to start?

All tunnels have a name, even if it is just one that people have given it via word of mouth. If you can figure that out then you can ask around using its common (or uncommon) name. Once you have the name then you may be able to google it or find old articles in the archives of your local library.

I find that people usually call any tunnel in their town "the tunnel" since they don't know (or even consider) other tunnels.

If you want to learn about a tunnel around Ft. Leavenworth you should read as much as you can about the history of the location... if the tunnel was used for anything more than steam pipes it'll probably get a mention. If you want to know when it was built, look at old maps (See: Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps) and that'll usually give you a range od dates they could be added.

Lastly, physical evidence can lead you to speculate... overhead or side brackets for pipes? Steam tunnel, probably not used much for people since they get too damn hot. Lots of signage and headroom and lighting? Probably was used as a pedestrian tunnel.

Very lastly, anyone who worked there would know about it, and it shouldn't be too hard to find someone who did.

I would start by doing a search on Google books. I find all kinds of shit from the 1900-1930's about tunnels. Back then it was a big achievement and would likely be mentioned in old newspapers. If your town is large enough, old papers will have been scanned and uploaded by now. If not, the library should have those neat little slide things full of old newspapers.

If it's drains you're after there's plenty of info to be found on this site. Much of it here in the rookie section.

Drains, drains, drains, drains, drains.

A library is probably your best bet.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

Thanks! I was able to locate a library that has a lot of blueprints dating back to the early 1900s of the fort and the majority of the buildings. I will be going to check them out next week to see what I find.

historical center, books about region's history, and google.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!
