I was recently talking with an archaeologist who has a publication about Old Victoria. I mentioned something about the irony of Portland advertising their tunnels (aka being on Cities of the Underground) while we here in Victoria deny the existence of them. They very quickly replied "There are no tunnels. There are pathways connecting buildings in Chinatown but thats it."

Oh sorry, were you talking about the 'non-existant tunnels that were inhabited and subsequently had a fire started in? Or maybe the old sewage system that was in the paper recently? What about bricked up windows in walls of a certain parking lot? City crews happening upon filled-in structures?

I let the topic alone. I suppose they're just trying to keep it on the down-low. Kind of got a chuckle out of the look on their face...

Nice. A satisfying feeling knowing you know they know you know they know you are right. Possible link to said Archies' Digest? Jughead is the best explorer I has ever met.

I think this was posted before; either way, enjoy. It's our town, our tunnelicious town, many years ago.

The blanket in the background was covering a hole in the wall that went to a tunnel under Johnson St., but we kept forgetting to bring a flashlight to go exploring. Then one night during practice some city workers showed up and sealed it with bricks. Sad that we missed our chance to see one of Victoria's underground tunnels."

Talk to the guy who owns Old Nick's on Johnson Street. His name is Bonehead (it's not really Bonehead). He's the Dayglo's drummer.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Yes. Three chords and pogo dancing does get tedious after 25 years. Still Bonehead has been a fixture of the punk scene since punk was an infant. That aside, he's also been through some of the lesser-known parts of Victoria...parts that have since been filled/sealed.

Jebus Crust, I was joking,...LOOK AT MY AVATAR, I know who they are. I saw them only a few months ago at the Cambie Nanaimo! Sad to see them part, but it was a damn good run. The best shows were at the Cobalt. When they played with DOA at the Commodore ballroom a few years back was fucking good too. I remember listening to them as a kid, before my teens..and I'm well over 30 now. They are a solid part of western Canada's punk heritage, and they will be missed. But as the old saying goes...."Don't worry, 'cause shit will always happen".

Wow.
1) Found my first post just over two years ago on page 107
2) Dayglos are gone for good? That's disappointing to five-years-ago-ladyluck
3) I'm leaving this city for good in about five weeks and unfortunately didn't ever find a pair of rainboots or the time to persuade you all with cupcakes to let me tag along for an adventure or two.

see, I <3 baking cupcakes but don't necessarily like eating them all. I'm the kind of person who looks at frosting and doubles in size. Would happily donate a batch or two to anyone who wanted to explore some storm drains or other fun spots in the near future.

You lost me at soybeans, but I love calamari, so maybe something could be worked out

You can always come back to visit Victoria, there will be more discoveries in the future. Or check out HOW before you depart.

Hello All
Just finished reading this entire thread... Whew!
I have lived in Victoria and the Cowichan Valley my entire life, and would you believe that I have only within the past few months heard of and started piecing together the pieces of the tunnels and such.
I have done a little research over the past few weeks... Have looked over some Fire Insurance maps, and some of the few maps I can find online. I think I want to do a little more research on my own before I go test the likes of the archive lady... Is she still around? Trolly as ever? I don't want to go down not knowing what I'm even asking for, and pissing her off even more with my obvious lack of knowledge.
My wife and I were out last night checking out some storm drains in the Fernwood area... Saw some pretty interesting drains. We were really looking for the Harris Creek runoff or whathaveyou... I'm pretty sure we didn't find it, although we started at the intersection around Vic High that was previously mentioned in this thread.
First expedition: Hall of Wonders... No big surprise. Next will be the Douglas Darkie.
Btw, kudos to the GCG crew. I really really respect what you guys have done; and hope to meet some of you for some adventure!

Go and visit Archive Lady every day and ask the same series of questions. First thing in the morning. "Hi...I'm visiting from Toronto and I was wondering if you know anything about the vast array of secret tunnels under Victoria." Every day.

Was out taking pictures of graffiti for a research paper, and I found myself behind the famous facade on Pandora. Stories about this site are so abundant that traipsing through the field I half expected myself to fall down into some forgotten passageway. Edging up beside some fairly fresh human excrement I examined the foundations of the building.

I messed up the quality trying to get the files down in size, so apologies for that. You should still be able to see the important stuff.

Filled and sealed before the fire took this building, but there is clearly an archway and space beyond. Maybe it's a secret passage, maybe it once led out onto under-sidewalk storage. I encourage everyone to go take a look for yourself, but be careful of sharps.

Also, I know it isn't clear in the last pic, but beyond is definitely filled.

Nice.

Somewhere in the archives is a post I made about this site 24 hours before the place went up in flames. I think it's called PANDORA STREET SQUAT.

Otherwise, well done. Keep at it.

An open letter to the municipal workers popping drains by the bridge at 3:45pm on the 28th...

Dear City Workers,

I normally don't notice your work, but your activities caught my eye yesterday as I drove West across the bridge. I was surprised to see you forgoing the hard hat, coveralls, and steel toed boots in your duties. It stood out as unique and fashion conscience despite your wonderfully reflective orange vests. Was it Casual Monday? I was also saddened to see you had to use your personal vehicle for work that day. Hope the city van gets out of the shop soon enough. Too bad you weren't able to transfer the pylons out of the back before you dropped it off at the garage. It looked like someone could easily hit your personal vehicle parked on the curb. Even a pickup truck or white van would have looked safer in that location. By the way, don't forget to claim the $0.52 per kilometer for mileage expenses. The pick axe was a very creative backup for your utility bar - kudos. (also in the work van I presume?) Lastly, I was so happy to see you sprinting across the road. I feel like every time I go by a work site, most guys are just standing around. Nobody has a sense of urgency anymore. Anyway, it was good to see a nervous punctuality about you - as if you knew people cared and were watching. As an onlooker, I wouldn't have noticed you if you hadn't been running. I'm glad to see my tax dollars at work in your enthusiasm.
(Don't forget to make the adjustment to your utility tunnel maps. Obviously you didn't know if you had the right manhole based on the five-second drop-and-give-me-twenty inspection.)

Keep up the good work!

Regards,
Yosh Kow
