I've heard on the news that the guns being moved back to Fort McNab are coming from both Point Pleasant and York Redoubt. I can confirm that some have already been moved from YR.

They had a mess of them that looked like 'spares' in the YR parking lot. I assume they came from that stockpile.

Yep, same pile. And seeing as the only gun left at Point Pleasant is at Fort Ogilvie, I imagine that'd be the other one the media was talking about.

Hey guys, been awhile. I was just thinking with all this work being done at point pleasant, are there any known tunnels under the park connecting the different forts? It seems totally logical for tunnels to be built, but iv never heard anything about any there.

Anyone know anything or have any thoughts?

I don't believe there is anything subterranean at PPP at all, aside from the sealed parts of Cambridge and PP Battery.

was doing a little searching and came up with this bit of interesting info on this place...anyone ever been...or have any knowledge of this place???

Other Name(s)

n/a
Links
n/a
Construction Date(s)

1865/01/01 to 1867/01/01
Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place

Almost completely hidden underground, the Main Magazine and Tunnel Complex is an elaborate subterranean structure of complex design honeycombing the southern underground portion of Fort Charlotte. It consists of the Main Magazine, a large vaulted space which has only one entrance surrounded by a network of interconnecting tunnels and smaller rooms such as the Shell filling Room, the Powder Recess and the long narrow Shell Store. As the Main Magazine and Tunnel Complex is located underground, the only visible features are the five points of access. The Main entrance is square shaped and topped with a concrete lintel accessing a brick and stone vaulted access tunnel. Three of the five entrances are visible and two are walled shut. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.
Heritage Value

The Main Magazine and Tunnel Complex of Fort Charlotte is a Classified Federal Heritage building because of its historical associations, and its architectural and environmental values.

Historical Value:
The Main Magazine and Tunnel Complex of Fort Charlotte is one of the best examples of a structure associated with the defence of the Imperial naval station of Halifax. The building was an integral part of the coastal defence system for the Royal Navy base at Halifax during the period of heightened tension following the Trent Affair of 1861. It offers an illustration of state-of-the-art technology in the servicing of heavy muzzle-loading rifled guns in a casemated battery. In addition, it illustrates the segregated storage and movement of ammunition in a multiple gun battery. It is a prime example of a defensive structure built to house the ammunition for the nine and ten inch rifled muzzle loading cannons of the Upper and Lower Batteries Its construction, the associated economic benefits and the subsequent influx of personnel had a significant impact on Halifax.

Architectural Value:
The Main Magazine and Tunnel Complex of Fort Charlotte is very good example of a functional 19th century military defence design. The construction and use of materials are highly specialized to accommodate technical functions and equipment. These, along with its excellent functional design reinforce its value as a specialized coastal artillery structure. The Main Magazine has a sophisticated functionality in its design. Its exposed walls of either stone or brick and its brick vaulted ceiling have very good quality of craftsmanship and reinforce the overall functionality. The windowless and complicated subterranean Tunnel Complex have irregularly coursed rubble walls and semicircular section brick barrel vaulting.

Environmental Value:
Although the structure is almost completely hidden underground, its presence as an essential element strengthens the other components of the fort which establish the coastal defence setting of Fort Charlotte.
The following character-defining elements of the Main Magazine and Tunnel Complex at Fort Charlotte should be respected, for example:

Its functional military defence design and good quality materials and craftsmanship as evidenced in:
-The Main Magazine brick vaulted ceilings.
-The communication passages.
-The store rooms.
-The walls and vaulting.
-The lamp passages associated grills, and lamp recesses.
-The remaining shell-lift systems and associated shafts.
-The walls of stone and brick.
-The remaining tracks leading from the entrances, through the shell stores to the lifts.

The manner in which the Main Magazine and Tunnel Complex as part of Fort Charlotte establishes the military character of the area.

This would be referring to George's Island, yes?

Had the chance to tour the place extensively last summer. As I understand it, they open it to the public once a year.

Parks Canada is hoping to have it open to the public in the near future. Last I spoke with them, they were still doing some work on shoring up parts of the structure, and finalizing how they were going to present it to the public.

Yeah, that is on Georges Island.

Parks Canada opens it to the public when they can. It's been open two summers over the past few years.

thanks guys always good info...was just wondering how much of the fort is still open and accessable when they do let the public in?I was there last yr on my boat a few times but it was almost hard to find anything it was so overgrown and most trips were at night or during a few quick day excursions while checking out the sunken ship off of the island.

From what I recall when I was there a couple years ago, most of the tunnels and such were open, but only to tour groups. I'd like to get out again, but hopefully there won't be any Parks personnel to shake their heads at us so we can explore the tunnels properly. I think there were only a few places that were completely OOB.

They usually open it in June. When they decide to open it, they sell tickets and shuttle everyone over on one of the Metro Transit ferries.

And then have gorilla-sized dudes to keep us in the boundaries of the park (don't wander off the path too far).

When I went, I noticed the entrances to the tunnels had locked barred doors they had to open to let us in. I assume when no one's out there (legitimately) those stay closed and locked.

I had posted some pics a while ago wherein I had managed to break away from the tour group, I think they're in the DB as well. It's really more of the same tunnels, which I am told circle the Island. If there were rooms further down, I didnt get to find out about them.

As PhotoSeeker says, you're not getting inside during the off season without cutting some locks open, which I DO NOT APPROVE of. Our best bet is either to try to secure official permission to poke around (unlikely), make friends with a Parks Canada / DNR (whoever owns the place) worker and see if they can sneak you over sometime (unlikely), or to go over unattended and hope that hoodlums have already broken in for you (possible).

Thank god you cant add to the location DB, I fail to see what pictures from this trip you would have used. Also your post has little to nothing to do with exploring
I see some dudes riding a shrimp boat, a dude rowing a boat, two girls in front of a wall, and some horrible pictures at night with lights in the back ground. Why dont you browse the forums a little more to get an idea of what goes on here.

Also, you already presented these pics about 8 or 9 months ago when you first showed up on the site.
You mentioned before that you have a crew that you explore with, perhaps they have some other pictures you could show us? I'd be quite interested to see some of the areas that you've said you got into.
