My vote is get a Pentax of some sort (similar pricing with more features), and enjoy perfect compatability with all manual focus lenses dating all the way back to the Pentax-a mount from 1980. I shoot all manual focus and get my lenses for CHEAP.

Or you could go with nikon, but for pretty much all the cameras around the price range of a used Rebel, you attach any old mf lens that's not a CPU lens, your camera will read "lens not attached." and will not meter at all. Unless you have an external light meter laying around (not cheap) I'd avoid Nikon entirely.

Or get an FD-EF adapter. Canon had some pretty spectacular glass back in the day, but a problem with Canon is you'll only be able to meter in stop down mode. Nikon and Canon seem to not give that much of a shit about backwards compatibility. Another problem with using an adapter is they work somewhat more or less as a teleconverter, and depending on how they're made, your image quality may suffer and you'll probably lose at least half a stop of lens speed.

With this $30 chip, one can have metering with P/S/A/M modes with almost every F-mount lens going back to 1959.

That's pretty good, considering that my F4 can use any lens made since 1959, and my D80, any lens since they rolled out AI.

Because the light meter in your camera would be off when the lens is stopped down. You'd have to meter wide open and then stop the lens down. Shooting in Aperture priority is sufficient 90% of the time (adjusting +/- EV) it's faster too, with RAW files you only have to get within a stop of properly exposed to have something you can work with in post (err on the side of overexposing if there aren't strong highlights present, underexposing if there are.)

Unless you carry an incident meter with you everywhere; normally even when shooting in full manual mode I use the cameras built in light meter to give me my base exposure.

I've been eyeing the Canon EF 20mm 2.5 for some wide angle stuff, where my 18-55 IS gives barrel distortion at its widest. Opinions on it anyone?

I'm going to buy a new compact camera soon, does the Panasonic Lumix LX-5 wil be a good choice?http://www.dprevie...nasonic_dmclx5.asp
I notice that there are blurry image sides which are taken wit LX-5, if someone has this camera - is it really noticeable at any conditions or i should don't worry about that?

Personally, if I were to shell out $400 for a point & shoot, I'd go with a Canon Powershot S95.

Yea, Canon s95 is plan B so far...Although it seems not as good as LX-5 in some aspects.

Depends if you are shooting in very low light with a tripod or handheld in dim to moderate light.

Compare them side by side
http://www.dprevie...ews/sidebyside.asp
another here
http://www.dprevie...ghendcompactgroup/

The LX5 is better in almost every respect, especially long exposures.
Canon disappoints me with their 15" min exposure time. It's what has put me off Canon point and shoots, their dslr's do 30" + bulb no reason their top of the line can't at least do 30".

LX5: 24-70mm, F/2-3.3, 60"-1/4000"
S95: 28-105mm,F/2-4.9, 15"-1/1600"

The S95 has a smaller pixel density and more ISO options (it handles noise better)

S95 IS0400 15" vs LX5 ISO100 60" the LX5 should have the edge.
S95 IS0800 15" vs LX5 ISO200 60" the LX5 will have the edge.
S95 IS01600 15" vs LX5 ISO400 60" the LX5 will definitely have the edge.

The s95 will have cleaner images vs the LX5 when both cameras are set to ISO400 or higher, but this is only relevant when you are shooting handheld, if you use a tripod (and there's zero reason you can't carry at least a pocketable one) the LX5 will be the better camera. Oh and the S95 is a bit smaller too.

I researched these extensively, the LX3/LX5 is the winner.

The other option is a mirrorless camera with prime lens:
Sony Alpha NEX 3 and 16mm (1.6 APS-C)

it will be better than both s95 and LX5

You do realize, though, that the MF Nikon lenses WILL mount and work perfectly though on those cameras you're mentioning? There are actually people who scour swap meets and used camera websites for the rock-bottom bargains available on the MF glass. Loss of in-camera metering is no problem at all to those of us who grew up in an era of clunky, add-on, non-coupled meters (or no meters at all).

Or get an FD-EF adapter.

Its not 1986 anymore; I think even the most die-hard users of Canon's FD lineup have finally converted to EOS. Just buy the correct EF-mount lens and don't waste your time with adapters. Or you could be like the guy in the other thread who hot-glued the EF adapter to his Sigma lens...

Well it's not a bad idea if you have the lenses lying around and need a project but you can buy better lenses for near the same price...

Oooor you could just go EVIL by picking up a Sony NEX and be able to adapt damn near anything...

I SO want one of those! I have an old 50s-vintage Nikon S2 rangefinder, and there's even an adapter available to use the rangefinder lenses on the NEX.... Tempting!

With the Nikon/Contax rangefinder lenses, it depends. A lot of them don't have their own focus helicoids, so they rely on the camera's focus unit to focus.

Leica M (as well as M39) lenses can be adapted very easily, though.

Yeah, I think that's just the 50mm's.

Such cool and bizarre cameras - an interior mount (for the 50s) and an exterior mount for everything else.

Yes they do. I'm one of those people. I have never bought an autofocus lens. Every MF lens I ever hooked up to my D40x wouldn't meter at all. It simply said "no lens attached." I was still able to shoot in full manual mode, but there was no light meter. Not a problem anymore now that I have a Sekonic Flashmaster, but not everybody is going to run out and buy one of those, especially on a budget.

He suggested adapting to minolta for old lenses. I figured an FD adapter would be just as practical, and the lenses would be just as cheap. Intention spans run really thin on UER don't they?
