| | | Abandoned Factory in Commerce, GA(Pics!) < on 2/15/2011 9:35 PM >
| | | So, my friends and I recently started to attend a church in Downtown Commerce. Across from it is this old abandoned factory. Looked really old, and I really dig the old brick buildings, so we checked it out. Scanned the area and part of the inside, and decided to come back another day when we had more time. This afternoon, a buddy and I went back and got a lot of pictures, but I'll post the "highlight reel" here. I don't know the exact history of the building, but I do know they manufactured/assembled Beepers and Voice recorders and later became either an repair or assembly shop for DirectTV receivers. Anyway, here are the pics: 1.

If you like to old historic type buildings and such, I do recommend this place. It's nothing spectacular, but there are some cool bits of memorabilia so to speak still left around. I would also recommend a breathing mask of some sort. Be it the dollar store "coffee filter" mask, or the nice respirator. Lots of dust and asbestos all over this place. Also would recommend thick-soled shoes and gloves. Broken glass and such all over as well. [last edit 2/16/2011 1:17 AM by emenhiser - edited 3 times]

| | | I would suggest not using the pop ups 'cause they're annoying, there is a box you can unclick in the gallery options to not have them pop up. Cool place though, looks like there was lots of random stuff.

| | | Word, thanx man! Modified the post and gallery. But yeah, that old building is really cool. Lots of different rooms and sections to walk around in, especially the upstairs area. Honestly, I was really surprised that it hadn't been tagged all over with graff(knock on wood). Though, I don't know of many artists in that area.

| | | Thanks, bro! By the looks of the area, there may be a couple more old buildings. Have to do a little more scoping around to be sure they aren't still in use, though. 'Preciate the invite. I'll def be keeping that in mind!

| | | Yeah, seriously, what's up with the jars? What kind of factory was this originally? Anyhow, good find. If you're up that way I once heard that there's an old mill in Jefferson that's worth a look, although I don't have any info beyond that. Just like spreading unconfirmed rumors.

| | | Most of the jars in #13 were empty, but a few of them contained Nuts, Bolts, Washers, etc... things of that nature. They all had different labels, though, and some looked exactly the same. So maybe some of the bolts/washers/whatever were made of different metals or had different coatings? I'm not sure of the exact history of the place, but just from observation it looks as though it was first a Sewing Factory of sorts, later a Beeper/Pager & Voice Recorder Manufacturer, and more recently a DirectTV unit of some kind. There were only a few pieces of evidence that pointed towards it being a Sewing Factory - One being a chalkboard with different materials and sewing terminology written on it, and another being a suuuuper old Sewing Machine Diagram(#22).
