Exploring the Old Mill

Visited this place twice in early October. I need to go back.

It was originally constructed as a cotton textile mill in the 1820s, with production eventually changing to weaving automobile tire bands for a few years. In the late 1920s, it was sold to a pasteboard manufacturing company and despite changing ownership twice more in the next several decades, it remained in the paper business. The factory was closed the early 2000s when a huge fire tore through it; most of the machinery has since been removed. The buildings themselves are still standing, though it's only a matter of time before they crumble away into a pile of rubble.

There are also a number of abandoned houses nearby, though I haven't gotten the chance to properly explore them yet. I assume they were lived in by some factory employees.

10. Haven't shopped this at all. Yum!

11. It won't last much longer.

12. This is another section of the factory located across a small river. I explored it briefly with a couple of friends in early July, but sadly the door we used to enter has been welded shut.

Sweet set dude. My wife and I are moving to NC so we are excited about all the things we get to explore now. This might be within driving distance...

Heh, I should've mentioned that the mill in this set is located in Maryland. My apologies.

I have driven to New Orleans for pizza. So driving is not that big of a deal to me. I have plans to head to MD anyway, apparently theres a lot of sweet locations there.

Haha nice. I love driving.

The factory complex itself is quite large and there's a lot I haven't checked out yet. There's been some activity going on with construction equipment and they tore down an old man-made waterfall recently, but I'm not sure what else they have planned.

For the building with the welded door, did you look for an entrance on the roof or through a second or third floor? I see most of those windows up there are busted out, and there appears to be something running into the building at the second floor, plus all those trees; just climb something and you'll probably find a way in. Whenever I can't find a door or something, I just go up a floor and pull on windows and latches until something pops open.

Otherwise, it's a really cool set. The stonework in 5-7 is really wonderful, and there is just something about brick falling to pieces that appeals to me. Maybe it was all those hours spent playing Brick Breaker.

Yeah, there are definitely other ways back into the welded-shut building, but they would be pretty tricky at best. It's easy enough to walk to it though. The whole complex sits alongside a narrow road that bridges over the river.

Sorry about the bad quality of this shot; I was forced to take it with my old phone at the time after accidentally dropping my camera (just a meh-quality P&S) and breaking it. It shows the other side of the building after walking over to it. You can see how the top of the building is falling apart.

This is that walkway thing you spotted. It used to connect to the main factory in some capacity, presumably so you wouldn't have to walk around the river to get from A to B. Unfortunately, when the building's current owner removed much of the machinery, they also took the end of this apart. I'm sure this can be scaled by an experienced climber, but sadly that's not a trait I possess.

I have some shots of the building's interior below. We didn't stay for long due to the structure's rough condition and asbestos hazard.

This was taken through a hole in the exterior wall.

An old motor or generator; a buddy of mine is in the background.

That walkway thing is really shaky. The buddy of mine in the previous shot (who by his estimation is only about a buck-fifty) walked out there and up the stairway to have a look, and the "floor" beneath him bent and wobbled with every step he took.

Anyway, I'm sure the building can still be entered; it'll just take a lot more work than before.
