| | | Definitely try and contact the owner first. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to make a buck on some "junk" that was just going to get bulldozed anyway. Ever see the show American Pickers? However I wouldn't take anything from a site, no matter how worthless, because if you get caught by the cops (as a friend of mine did) they will definitely charge you with burglary. My friend only took a few small pieces of copper wire and I think a nut and bolt, and wouldn't you know it, it was the only time we were ever busted. he got in pretty big trouble for taking items that weren't worth their weight at the scrapyard.

| | | I think its ok to take small things. I have taken take a nut, a sign, a dr pepper can, and a sticker, and a fire ext. sign(that one was given to me by a friend who found it). I figure so long as you are not taking something away from the places personality its ok. Like at the six flags in NOLA we found a film reel for the Spongebob movie ride they had there. My son loves Spongebob and i thought, well if i take a couple of cells and get them framed and tell him the story behind them later he would think it was really cool. But i decided that finding that was one of the coolest things there and to ruin it for others would've been bad on my part. Just my opinion.

| | | Easy fer you to say, you're in Jersey. Isn't your state flower an old smokestack? Here in Cali the real estate is still worth way too much. If you snooze you do lose, most everything here gets leveled...quickly. I'm actually gonna travel out of state to explore for just this reason. Your troll-fu is better this time though, 4/10.

how long have you been in cali? Have you actually looked for stuff?
Tourism, human circulation considered as consumption is fundamentally nothing more than the leisure of going to see what has become banal. |

I've been here since my parents moved us over from Spain in 1980. I have been exploring since I was a kid in Europe, my dad was an avid explorer. I actually know of many sites in the North bay area, but I transplanted to San Jose for work a couple years ago and as a result am a bit disappointed in the locations. Things are more sparse here, less rural of course and people are more inclusive. I find that to get in the sites here its more tricky (not a problem) but the police presence is insane. Whats the urbex like in L.A.? It seems like you have lots of industrial locations and the drains are supposed to be good.

| | | I'm cautious of taking things because I don't want to become a packrat. I also don't do it much so others won't get the idea. That said, I do sometimes take things I find in abandonments. My main rule of thumb is that I'll take it from an abandonment if I'd take it from an active location (so things like matchbooks, business cards, pamphlets are justified). Also, it should be something that's prevalent, and the absence of one won't be missed. In one abandoned officetel I found a pianist's studio where she left behind several boxes of her CD. I took one with me, and sort of think she'd be happy about that. There was also a working record player there (which I really really needed), but I left it which was the right choice because she later came back and took it herself (or someone did). I've never taken anything and later regretted it. [last edit 12/16/2010 9:24 AM by Steed - edited 1 times]

| | | It's about 50/50 for me. I'd say I have left behind an equal amount of mass as I have taken from places. I have also watched moderators take large items from locations on several occasions. Though I am somehow not a full member anymore for something I left behind. Take only pictures...and whatever else isn't bolted down, but yeah leave only footprints, don't leave shit in a location =P
Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested. |

| | | I've seen things in abandonments that look cool but didn't take them since sitting in my house they would look like dirty, rusty pieces of shit. And things like no smoking signs, exit signs, etc are only cute if you're decorating a dorm room.

It was from my first explore with my wife. There was a whole lot nothing there so I took a tiny nut. As for the signs we cleaned them and decorated our kitchen with them.

| | | I removed a fire signal horn from the Teleglobe earth station in Charleston, Nova Scotia, Canada. I only did this becuase the building it was in had been demo'd. The horn was laying at the base of a pile of scrap and would have eben destroyed for its metals. So i removed it, thus saving its exsistance. Personally, I can only justify removing an item from a site if that item has a 100% of being destroyed and a 100% chance of not being missed. Now, I am going to be getting to very valuable vintage RCA Victor televisions from an abandoned mill the owner used as storage. I simply asked the owner "There are two old tvs in your mill. If they stay there they are going to rot and rust and soon they will be useless. Can I buy them from you?" I also know the guy so he said "Well I don't see why you should have to BUY them. But they are my brothers... I'll ask"
I'm as Canadian as it gets. |

| | | I've been ueing for a long long time and don't like taking things unless it is for reasons of preservation or if it's being demoed and going to the junk pile anyways. On that note, do keep in mind that if you get caught leaving a spot with said items, you will be charged and instead of a ticket you may end up with a criminal record. To each his own.
