| | Went through a very old house last night < on 12/12/2010 5:14 AM >
| | | Another spur of the moment adventure. I swear we can't recon a place without going in it lol. I went in the Anderson-Coward house which is at Crump/East basically. It was the location of what was once "considered the city's finest restaurant for many years, Justine’s, and is an endangered historic property due to vandalism and neglect. The is believed to have been built in the 1840s and remodeled and expanded in the 1850s." Some research I did says it was built in 1843. The oldest building I've been in so far. Supposedly there was once a civil war "skirmish" on the property. The house seems to have an amazing history. Unfortunately nothing in it is too old other than the structure b/c the restaurant that was there closed in 1993. It's very easy to get into. Once inside we started at the basement and made our way up. The basement contains a bar and a wine cellar. You can see the over 150-year old clay bricks. It's just astonishing to me to just look at those bricks and imagine how they got there. Supposedly slaves built the house. bar

Upstairs you find a very unique layout. Almost like it was more of a bed and breakfast than a restaurant. The rooms are all painted different, vivid colors. There is a gold, red, orange and purple room. The hardwood floors seem to be original. The house is in bad, bad shape. Holes in the floors, walls and ceiling. Several spots in the floors that are soft or not level. Where the wall is falling apart or damaged you can see the original slats.
Original brick fireplace and clay bricks
The main entrance is a large room with a set of stairs that are covered by a red carpet. The room off to the right has some impressive crown molding.
All in all it was a pretty good explore. Not much original left except the actual building itself. To me, that's enough considering how old it is. Here is an article about the house http://www.memphis...x?id=36019&print=1
And here is a weird pic I took. I took a picture of this reception bar/desk area and you can see a blue cloud. Idk what it is, but it's weird.

If it looks like a wolf, acts like a wolf, and howls like a wolf, it's probably an asshole.

That's quite a good story for the house. I always enjoy when people provide a bit of detail to the pictures. Some times there just isn't any to be told, but I like the fact that you've looked into the history of this building. I definitely would recommend coming back with either better camera equipment or someone who has better camera equipment so we can see what looks and sounds like a beautiful, ornate old building. As well, I know it's a pretty well-known building (google pulls it right up), but I would caution against using the actual name and exact location of the site. It's just an easy way for other people to go ruin the beauty of the building. Or worse, for some authority to notice it mentioned here and then take stricter measures to keep us out. And for the record, every time I look at your username I just see sex right smack in the middle.
