rails are 6-7 inches tall and the plow on the front of an engine sits 1-3 inches above that, I don't think its something you'd want to try for the first time in an emergency. plus imagine what just one hose or a bit of chain could do to you if it were hanging too low at 60mph. I would have hung off the edge by my fingers til the train passed but thats just me
|
i've seen videos of people doing it in Russia just for kicks. admittedly, it's stupid. the potential dangling chains or other structures would be a big concern. but it has been done successfully. maybe trains in Russia are different, but you can definitely find video of it. i can't do a pull up, so hanging on while a train passes and then trying to pull myself up would likely result in me falling to my death. of course, i highly doubt that i ever find myself on such a structure.

He, at least he's secured himself a place in the legend. The same ghost hunters will probably sneak out there next year looking for his non-corporeal form.

People have forced half ton boulders off their bodies in moments of desperation. You can do a pull up.
Adrenaline rush would probably be enough, if not adrenaline is nothing compared to ATP. Releasing all of the ATP you have stored in your muscles at once is what is responsible for the so called "superhuman feats" that occur only when your life hangs in the balance. If a dude can toss a half ton boulder, you can do a pull up.

People have also done really fucking stupid things when in times of duress as well, like jump out of buildings to fall to their deaths and other things that directly go AGAINST survival and what one would think would be the logical decision. You never know how you're going to react in a survival situation until you're in it. Some calm, cool-headed people totally lose it when push comes to shove. I'm not going to go hang out in a dangerous location on the assumption that I'll have superhuman abilities if the situation calls for it. That's just stupid. Pushing yourself to the edge of your abilities is fine - banking on skillz you hope to have thanks to adrenaline is a great way to get killed. Also, I know what ATP is. Biology major. I can tell you how actin and myosin work, too. I'm still not willing to bet on it, and would very much rather just stay off of active rail bridges unless there's a better escape than having to hang on for dear life then do a pull up. I think that's pretty damn reasonable, don't you?

They train slows down towards the end of the video, so I'd like to think they did. Very idiotic thing to do.
dsankt: In fact, the day I die yall are welcome to form an orderly queue and run a train on my eye sockets. I'll be dead and frankly, will not give a f*ck. budda: That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Fuck me sideways this is insane. ~~~~~~ Because it's Cincinnati |

I'm not sure I understand how the body in that video is related to laying under the train... maybe I'm missing something about the physics here. I'd think that if you were laying under the train and it somehow caught you, that you'd be more in the middle and a bit more mangled. It looks like that person fell while trying to get on, off, or cross between cars?

Also... doesn't it seem just a bit hypocritical to hope that they get caught when you also engage in illegal activity? [last edit 12/1/2010 3:37 PM by bouncewiggle - edited 1 times]

Good point but i feel there is a stupidity factor there that doesn't compare to going in an abandoned building and taking some pictures

That was in reference to those that ride on the roof. Chances of getting caught like this outside of Moscow and larger populous cities is near negative infinity. I had a few friends that done something like this (riding on the outside cabin of the very last wagon).

Some people would say going into abandoned buildings is pretty stupid too. It all depends on your perspective and what your risk threshold is. In abandoned buildings you can... - fall through unstable flooring - encounter chemicals/substances that can be hazardous to your health - sustain serious injuries from broken glass, sharp metal pokey things, etc. - be seriously hurt/die if the structure you are in caves in or parts of it fall upon you unexpectedly - and probably other dangers that have slipped my mind at the moment [last edit 12/2/2010 2:58 AM by bouncewiggle - edited 1 times]
