NO LONGER deprived of photography
| | | The introduction of an addict! < on 5/7/2010 6:15 PM >
| | | Hello fellow explorers! I have been lurking on UER for a long time, but this is my first post - I was a bit intimidated by the amount of professionalism on here, frankly. I'm probably the first member from Hungary, UE seems to be quite unknown around here. I picked up a point-and-shoot in the summer of 2008 and was completely hooked on photography by the end of it; I taught myself everything there was to know. Sadly, due to my rather dangerous lack of a life instinct, the poor little Powershot died in June 2009, and I have had no camera ever since... Can you imagine how much that sucks?? seeing tourists and random people walking around with DSLRs all over the place, most of them probably having no idea about photography... and I'm stuck here with no camera, never having held a DSLR in my hand for more than 2 minutes...
Anyway, I got into UE somewhere along my photography learning curve, so please excuse my amateurish pictures; I'd go back and re-shoot, if only I could. They will get better as you go further down I promise Many of these were taken before I got my first tripod, so the composition was usually determined by however I could get the camera to stay still on some surface. The camera also had the problem of one side of the pictures always being out of focus.
My first contact with UE: The Hungária Baths Built in 1827, and subsequently expanded in 1840, 1890 and 1910. Later, one of the wings of the baths was converted into a hotel; the (once very famous) Hotel Continental opened its doors in 1920. 1
As the baths started falling more and more into disuse, the hotel started using many parts of the building from 1965. However, as the hotel permanently closed its doors in 1970, both buildings were left there to fall into the merciless arms of decay. 2 (the staircases are no more)
In 1996, a foreign company purchased the buildings, with the plan of reconstructing them into a luxury spa-and-hotel. However, the authorities did not grant them permission to demolish the buildings, and wanted insurance that the façade of the building will be preserved.
The façade - photo not mine Due to the investor's incompetence however, a large section of the building collapsed, and in 2002 the building was officially marked extremely dangerous, and the investor was ordered to demolish the rear tract of the building. Because of this, most of the building was long gone before I ever got to see it. Above are the remains of the baths, separated from the locked-down remaining parts of Hotel Continental by a large construction site. 3 - The main entrance - the other side of the façade
Since the rear part of the buildings were demolished, almost all of the hotel is gone, except for the service building (including smokestack ). Right next to it is an abandoned apartment house... and another one! 4 - Panorama from the roof of the 1st apartment house. Click for fullsize!
5 - Perversion circa 1960

7
Of course, pretty soon I learned about that thing called HDR, and I was pretty hooked on it for a while because it allowed me to bring even more out of the little P&S than I already did. So as someone here on UER so eloquently put it: 8 - Continental Rainbow Clown Vomit HDR
My favorite kind of place: 9 - The chimney forest
10
11 - Damn that noise!
(no, it's not me)
12 - A tiny little security breach
13 - Mummified spiders!
I want to climb that chimney... the only reason I haven't done so yet is the 24-hour security, but that will cease to matter once I get a camera.. 14
My first opportunity to feed the addiction since June: a trip into a ~200 year old house; a friend of mine brought along a puny little 6-megapixel Lumix point-n-shoot... At one point they left me alone for a while in a pitch black room with the little cam and a flashlight. 15 - The results
16
And, finally: BRIIIIDGE!!! 17
These were taken last month, when a friend of mine lent me her Fuji S1500 for 1.5 days. It's still a point-and-shoot, but it's the most advanced camera I had with me by far, since it (finally!) gave me control over aperture
18 - At the top
19 - The crown
If you made it this far, thank you very much for checking my shit! I'm sorry for posting so much, but I've gotten to like this place a lot and have been wanting to share all this with you guys for a looong time. And I've still got so much to share! And I haven't even mentioned all the crazy shit I've done that I couldn't take pictures of... I hope some of you can appreciate my efforts and try to ignore the crappiness of most of my photos
Hope to see some of ya'll sometime (I mean, I can't be the only one from Budapest!) deadmind

| | | Lovely photos - nice one! Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

| | | Fucking great for a first set. That lens flaring bursting out of your head is actually pretty cool, I think! Digging the pornado and the spider, too. Keep shooting.

| | | Thanks a lot for the comments and the warm welcome, everyone! To my great surprise, I am now a Full Member of the site!!
I've uploaded a few more of my old shots: #20 - chimney forest sans HDR
At the very top (11th floor) of the Hungária baths... 21 - ninja on the roof.
My first attempt at light painting. 22 - stop!
23 - more of the No Tripod Blues
24 - abandoned house-eating tree
I found out where phonebooths go after they die! 25
It might be a little awkward...no, it's.. the Inconvenient Truth. I've found abandoned phone booths, but I didn't explore them because security was too tight. Would you believe that without the picture?
One more shot of the Chaos Terrorist (this is after all the asbestos has blacked out most of his face) 26
An active site I've infiltrated many times. It has 24 hour security, but that didn't stop me from climbing to the roof of the active(!) pharmaceutical laboratory(!) 20 meters from the guard booth(!) 6am on a monday morning - and that was just one of the buildings I conquered. There was only one with a flat roof that I hadn't, one of the most active ones (all throughout the night), because there was no ladder. They installed a brand new caged steel ladder last week... Mmmmmmm thank you very much good sirs!
27 - awww, the temptation!

| | | Very nice work, i enjoyed your pictures. I hope in the future to explore in that area too. You put a lot of effort in your pictures i can tell. Experimenting with light is always fun to do, especially at abandoned places. Nice first post and keep up the good work, it's appreciated much!

| | | These are actually really nice. Way to work with what you have! Also that Fuji is a pretty competent bridge camera, I wouldn't pass it off as a regular point-n-shoot. Bridge cameras generally have larger sensors, more competent lenses, and fully controllable exposure settings.. In any case good work man
