I've heard some chat about a "Seven Gates of Hell" on a route 666 (which DOES exist). It usually comes out as a haunted story, but included there's a big abandoned house at the end once you get "past" the seven gates. Has anyone even ever heard of this?

I would guess you are referring to the location mentioned below:

Searching Google Maps for the terms:

route 666 virginia forest

Will bring up the correct spot. Dishearteningly, this shows no bridges over anything bigger than a stream, and the only gates would be in front of the McMansions on the road.

Since the tale of Route 666 seems to attach itself to anywhere there is a Route 666, I think you will have to sift through all the ghost stories to see if there is anything close to the "original".

Unfortunately, 666 is just a number that comes up sometimes in the completely arbitrary highway naming conventions. I doubt that the State Highway Administration has secretly tapped some unholy magical phenomenon. And it's the sort of number that attracts swarms of creepy stories, so I wouldn't put too much stock in the possible reality of any old houses that might be mentioned in conjunction with it.

Though hey, maybe some guy built a huge creepy house on that road just to be creepy, and then nobody would buy it, so it's abandoned. I guess you never know.

In places forgotten, tread where you will. -=- http://www.flickr.com/photos/avius/

Ohio has a Route 666 too.

“We are not going to have the kind of cooperation we need if everyone insists on their own narrow version of reality. … the great divide in the world today … is between people who have the courage to listen and those who are convinced that they already know it all.”
