A Brief Visit to My Local Asylum

I won't get into the history of this place seeing how goddam late it is, but I have some on my Flickr, which I will link. I will tell you that it is the oldest standing asylum in the US if not the Western Hemisphere (which I have heard unsubstantiated claims of). Those of you in the know will know what this is. Did it alone, which was kind of creepy. First solo asylum explore, and it was my first time there. At least there were no dark steam tunnels, which actually kind of sucks because it makes it harder to move from building to building.

Only hit up one ward and a few smaller buildings, but I am returning soon to conquer the rest. Here goes

Interior photos were not from this building. Can't wait to get into this one

Some more pictures + brief history on my Flickr, and more from here coming soon

Excellent! I cannot wait for more. That building looks so new. I guess they did some major cleaning of the place.

Nice shots. I have a love/hate relationship with this place.

They are slowly turning them into very high end condos.

If people who move into these only knew what used to go on in their kitchen, living room, bedroom, etc...

truth. before they started selling them, a couple friends and i got inside. they were almost done and looked very very nice. granite countertops, fancy shmancy wall sconces and chandeliers, crazy master bathrooms, etc. glad to see something reused so awesomely instead of knocked to the ground.

everything else there is explorable tho.

leave the gun. take the cannoli.

I got a proper tour of the finished stuff and ya it looked damn nice. They reused a lot of old doors and door frames and beams and floors where possible, it looked very nice.

It still cracked me up though that what used to most likely be an isolation room was now a pantry in the kitchen.

Ya it seems like the dark history of Western State never really gets talked about in town, and certainly not in the condos brochures or website. I'm going to the historical preservations' meet and greet this friday and I'm curious to see what they have to say about the asylum.

I think it'd be a crackup to attend one of their weekend open houses and then give myself the full tour. We'll see. No but really I am going to go to one of their open houses sometime, and see how much I can get the sales associate to talk about the past of the place. I've heard that they're desperate to move units at this point; there are only like 4 residents.

Perhaps that's because they want DC condo prices when it's in the middle of nowhere. Sure it's a nice condo but I could have a house with a good amount of land for the same or less as their LOW end condos. What they wanted for their top end condo would get you a nice McMansion around these parts.

Ya and this town has some really gorgeous historic houses for rock bottom prices, and lots of houses on the market. Hey at least they put new roofs on everything before it folds, heh heh. We'll see, I think they'll be just fine

I want to know who thought it would be a good idea to put condos in that town. It's a beautiful town, but there is nothing there that will bring in new tenants (IE - No huge corporations, universities/colleges, etc.).

I am glad that they cleaned up the building and made repairs. Now it will be around long after the condos have failed.

I think they were banking on commuters going over the mountain since the real estate over there is much more expensive.. I agree with you though, still a stupid idea.

@ The Crowing

They repainted and re-roofed most of the buildings, only two of which have been converted to condos.

Yea the whole thing just does not make sense to me. It's not a bedroom community to anything close that has any sort of a large work force like that. I could see them surviving if it was competitively priced with other options out there for the area but they aren't getting DC metro prices for out in the middle of nowhere...

New Jersey can go directly to hell.
Great shots, this place looks very cool.
Number seven makes the place look brand spankin' new.

Did you end up having to wear a respirator?

Ha I've heard that before. Even tho Jersey really can be a drag it's still my home despite the fact that I don't live there anymore..

I see you're local to Jersey as well as Manhattan and Philly.. I lived in Manhattan for a bit but not Philly yet. I plan on spending some time there or in Chicago next.

You know is some ways I share that sentiment..

Thanks, it does look really spiffy besides the missing pillar, at least the condo people did a little refurbish on this old duesy. This is the most handsome asylum I've been to yet IMO, too bad it's so empty inside

Didn't wear a mask which I usually do in old institutions, but there is lots of fresh air and no fiber-filled tunnels to worry about
