| | | That would never work! This site runs on the illusion of being the biggest. 33,000+ members over 7.5 years! Never mind that 24,761 of those users never made a second post. 22,402 never made their first...

| | | Lol, I met more Alaskan explorers by just wandering around. Dunno if any of them do much anymore though. It's a state where rugged individualism has to extend to UE if you want to get anything done.... scout everything, all the time by yourself, and hope you find someone else to go back and do the dangerous stuff that requires more people! Or start recruiting in the Uni geology department, natural cave spelunking club, etc. I would actually love to come up and spend more time in certain areas, Hatcher Pass is a dream come true for mine explorers in the lower 48, and yet it only gets crappy artsy photos by vacationing yuppies. Likewise Kennicott, Dutch Harbor, etc are better than a lot of stuff "down south", but are virtually ignored. At least Kodiak used to have some WWII bunker explorers. And someone has to get their act together and go to Attu and Kiska. No one has explored those Japanese underground hospitals since.... ever? The booby traps can't still be live after 60 years right?

| | | Well, I can tell you that Dutch Harbor and Adak are not very interesting. Structurally speaking

| | | Really? Adak has TONS of abandoned military buildings just waiting to be explored. Problem is the cost of getting there and spending a few days checking out everything.

| | | There are quite a few WWII bunkers and installations in both those places. Adak has (or had, if they've torn it down) a pretty big 1980s ghost town of military housing from the base, as well as the old parts of the bases from WWII. Dutch Harbor has some underground tunnels that I've not heard of anyone exploring, you always see pictures of them in Alaska Geographic, but like the Japanese tunnels on Attu and Kiska, no one ever goes inside Maybe they're boring to the locals, but I know I had fun in the bunkers and military tunnels in Sitka, despite the rest of the town being super lame. Adak 2006: http://www.navycth...om/adakhoyt01.html Correction, this guy made it into the mysterious Dutch Harbor tunnel: http://www.flickr....shak13/1429948507/

I would not rule out my missing something spectacular, but everything I saw on both islands was single room structurally reinforced concrete shells of what may have been interesting 50 years ago. The concrete survived, the steel blast doors one some of the stuff are still there though rusted beyond recognition, but all the things like interior doors, furniture, flooring (where it isn’t dirt and plants) are gone. Some of the underground hallways were interesting but not long. 20-30' max I suppose interesting is a mater of opinion though.
