New Explorers needing some help
< on 9/22/2009 9:27 PM >
Posted on Forum: Infiltration Forums

I'm brand new to this. I'm part of a group that is fascinated by urban exploration. We want to learn as much as possible, and get into it quickly, but we are starting really green.
We need some experienced explorers to help us out. We are located in Richmond, VA, but willing to drive up to a few hours out if necessary.
If anyone wants to help us out, give advice, go exploring with us... whatever, please respond. Your expertise, adventures, stories, and advice is very appreciated.
Thank you!

I'll be damned. Didn't even ask for locations.

Come on easties, somebody step up and help out.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Keep an eye out when you are driving your daily lives. things will start to pop out to you. I never realized how many places i drove by on a daily basis were abandoned till i started paying more attention to it. Of coarse there is more to the world of Urban Exploring than abandonments but that's just the area I'm fascinated with.

Definitely make your way though the forums here. especially Rookie Forum. Gave me a big foothold.

Once you find some places, start posting your pics. Help will come from there.

Just a bit of advice from a fellow UER Rookie.

The caged being inside of you must break free from his shackles, for our partial sanity or pseudo-sanity, if so applies, cannot contain it forever without repercussion of mental breakdown.

A few of the members explored the abandoned building behind our school (we're grad students) but it was kind of anti-climactic. We really want to go exploring with people who have done it before. We want you all to teach us the ropes.

You will find that most people here are very suspicious of newcomers. It's not an insult to you, it's just a matter of self preservation. The "authorities" are always trolling UE web sites.

I am in the Richmond area. I would be happy to help, but I need to know more about you first. No, I don't mean personal information. Do you have any exploration pics you can post?

Send me a PM. Lets talk for a while and then go from there.

Broadly speaking, UER members are unlikely to be much help until they see what you will do on your own. Even in low-key explores, I'd have to depend on some things I can't know even when I first meet you.

One way to get started is drains. They can be pretty dangerous, so read up on them first - the Approach.txt by Cave Clan is a good start. If even a managed risk of drowning pummeled in the dark doesn't suit your fancy, try for abandonments.

It's sometimes easy to find drainage systems (Where does the river leaving downtown come from?), but access is often wet or otherwise unpleasant. Bring backup lights.

To find abandonments, look for signs of poor maintenance, constantly empty lots, etc. Like most "adventure hobbies" this one tends to be self-guided. Rock climbers are no less secretive about good faces, ditto cavers. Oh, try and get to some meetups, and have fun at this. Any climbable rooftops around?

Edit: Holy balls double posts. Thanks, Meta. The bus does time travel, that'd also explain why it's always late...

You can always infiltrate a hotel or anywhere to get on a roof somewhere take pictures and give us the story. If you are really interested I know of a few places down here in the Hampton Roads area. I can show you around some crazy shit if your bold and want to get your adrenaline pumping.

Well...... crap........

I appreciate the nudge. But, for us, it is just as much about meeting the people who do it as it is about the actual exploring. No, we are not cops. We are grad students who are interested in the culture around urban exploration and everything to do with it. The kicker is that we aren't just studying it. We really want to do it, scratches, bruises, cops and all. Whatever happens happens. We are certainly willing to take all the risks involved and keep up with whoever decides to help us.

So it's more of the study of urban exploration with a hands on approach? I could be reading it wrong.

Yes. I don't want to mislead anyone. We are technically "studying" urban exploration. But it is a topic we all chose because we wanted to get into it. So please don't think of us as spectators or 'researchers' because it isn't like that. We just want to see some cool stuff and meet some cool people and learn a few things along the way.

You're probably far better off without the cops, haha.

Try getting into some of the restricted areas of your college; rooftops are a good start. The National Register of Historic Places website and Bing Maps are your friends as well; I've found some good stuff on the NRHP, and if you're not sure of the status of it (although there is a section of the site for supposed vacant/not in use buildings), that's where the birds eye feature on Bing Maps comes into play. Also just a general Google search for "abandoned" + your area might yield some results; local newspaper websites are sometimes useful for stuff like that, or at least around here they are. Also, as was mentioned by someone else, just lurk around the boards a bit and pay attention to the posts in Mid-Atlantic forum. There's also the public entries in the UE Database that might be of assistance. Another idea is to ask your parents/grandparents/other elders; they're more useful than you might at first think.

If you were in New England, I'd be more than happy to offer my assistance, but unfortunately, Richmond is a waaaaays away from New Hampshire. Good luck and happy exploring! Can't wait to see what you guys find.

Well my offer still stands for some exploring down here in Hampton. Not too much in terms of abandonments but I know of quite a few nearby. And ofcourse if you want some infiltration style exploring that is in abundance here. I'm available this Friday after work and all day and night Saturday and if you want you can crash at my place for friday night.

Well...... crap........

In my not so humble opinion what you're wanting is tourism, not exploration.

You've got a group of like-minded people which is more than most people have when they start out. Take a wander around your central business district, for every fifty locked fire escapes there's one open.
