Avius explores the Rockies part 2: Chief Mountain Schoolhouse

Greetings from the Mid-Atlantic! Last week, I did a long road trip from the Salt Lake City airport, up the spine of the Rockies, to the Glacier/Waterton National Parks for my Wife's family reunion. (Airports with cheap, direct flights are kind of sparse out here, eh?) I got to explore a few places along the way, and I'll post them in their respective regional forums.

This was the highlight of the trip, even though it is very small. This old one-room schoolhouse is where my wife's maternal grandmother taught back in the 1930's, before she got married and settled down. We don't know how long it has been closed, but probably since the 40's or 50's. It now stands in a disused cow pasture.

My wife remembers stories about how her grandmother would live with a local family each year. She would have to get up before dawn and walk miles to the school, so she could light the fire and warm it up before the children got there.

1. Chief Mountain, and the road that runs past the school.

2. The roof, peeking out from the bushes that have overgrown the south side.

3. The building is surprisingly intact, given the heavy snows and strong winds in the area.

4.

5.

6. An unfortunate cow had been ensnared by some wire that had been strung up.

7. It was strange to think of the personal history we had with the site, while standing amidst the strewn bones of its victim.

8. These chalkboards were once covered in grandma's neat cursive.

9.

10. A barn owl has taken up residence, and has woven several cow ribs into its nest.

11. A final look back as the sun sets.

Great stuff! Nice when you've got a personal connection to such a neat old structure. Lucky you got to visit before it fell down. Probably a thousand little stories in that school house.

Rest in peace, my pal Mowgli - the best dog there ever was.

Oh! That actually makes sense. I just assumed, since it was a cow pasture. I guess I should have done a quick google on "cow feet" before I posted inaccurate information.

This place still has a charming quality to it. Regardless of the foot. Thanks for sharing.

Do not attempt to stop with hands or genitals.
