| | | Time for another heinrick history lesson, hopefully this time without over-sharpened photos (dobi will be the judge of that, no doubt). These two locations, like the ones of my previous set, were established by the earlier settlers of the area, relocating north after the Civil War. One man was poor farmer, the other a wealthy lumber baron. They would later become influential in shaping the towns near them after being elected for public office, but both of them would eventually see their legacies lost. 1
The area is still farmed prosperously, but the activity and business within towns have since declined only after a few generations. 2
3
This first settlement was a modest, but comfortable one, providing just the bare necessities, but with an obvious pride in craftsmanship. 4
5
There was a working well outside, and eventually, electricity but never any indoor plumbing. 6

This next residence is easily missed from the road, despite it's grand size. People not knowing what to look for would never guess what is standing a quarter mile from the dirt road, behind tall grass and overgrown trees. What makes this house more out of place is the large, elaborate, and lavish design of the house itself, all very uncommon investments in this area during its time 10
As I approached the house, I quickly noticed the roar of bees swarming the plants growing on and around the building. Luckily, none were to bother me inside. 11
A wide veranda circled the front of the house, clearly enclosed for the last winter by the former residents. 12
13
Just what every cool house needs: a trap door into a dungeon! This was actually a heat vent for the large furnace downstairs, another modern convenience. These kind of things are typically expected in urban homes of established towns (think today's frat houses), not in the middle of nowhere. 14
15
16
Yet again, more extraordinary millwork trim. 17
18
A medicine cabinet, in the pantry, of all places. 19
20
Some unfortunate baby kittens were stuck between the joists of the wall by this corner. Their screams and clawing haunted and disturbed me the entire time. 21
22
In the end, both men and their families ended up in the same place. [last edit 7/17/2009 12:44 PM by heinrick - edited 1 times]

| | | Please tell us you kicked a hole into the wall and freed the kittens rather than leave them in there before returning home. Other than that, Grade A win pics.

| | | Excellent pictures, great commentary. I also hope you tried to free the kittens, though if they got in there, presumably they could get out. Re: the cemetery, in Ohio, all cemeteries, even those on private property, are required to be publicly accessible during normal hours.

| | | Re: The rich and the poor <Reply # 19 on 7/19/2009 1:42 AM >
| | | I would rather indoor plumbing as to electricity myself. This is because you can purchase and get professionally installed wood furnace that will direct heat threw the vents, wood cooking stove cooking range for your food and a wood hot water tank, which will allow hot water out of the tap. Sure it takes more to clean, but you can hire cleaners. And if your off the grid, it is better then nothing. For light at night time: you have the option of oil based lamps, battery lamps and hand crank. For Radio: battery or hand crank. For clocks, wind up or battery, or pendulum. For your laptop and cellphone, you can get a hand crank charger or a portable solar panel. Land Line phones do not require electricity. And for TV, if your living far enough out to be off the grid, I doubt you are a TV watcher. I have however seen phone and cell service in area's that aren't serviced by the power grid, especially if your access your property from a farm access road or a forestry access road, as theses people often need the use of land lines and cellulars, but bring their own power generation equipment. So that depends on your location. [last edit 7/19/2009 1:53 AM by Greg - edited 1 times]
