I just noticed that this thread is FM-only. That might limit the people that show up at the event. It might be on purpose, but if not, Raticus can fix it.

Well Robert, I just now came over here to change it for you, but alas, I've been out paced by the ever present all thread viewing Meta.

As for the bats there is a secondary bridge up north, just into Roehd Rock. I've actually only been to that bridge and not the Congress Ave ones because it's right by my house. I'd be game for either bat bridge.

Sweet!Maybe we can check the Congress bridge since we'll already be around that area.
I know some folks may not be down for the Korean.

I'm one of those folks , BBQ or Burgers sounds good. There isn't any Mexican restauraunt's downtown ?

Post by RevSM
PS: I'm buying a car today! Hooray A/C!

Hooray for sure !! I just fixed mine last night and the shit is so cold I actually have to turn it down.

As for food...

Chuy's would be the Austin trademark Mexican joint. They're at 1728 Barton Springs, just south of the river.

As for burger's Hut's is a fine choice, and if you actually want to be right downtown, probably the best choice. Also only about 200 yards from where I'm lecturing that night, so easy for me. On 6th street, just east of Lamar.

Another place you might consider, an absolute Austin classic, is the original Conan's Pizza at 29th & Guadalupe. It's not 'downtown' per se, it's on the UT drag, but would probably be a very welcoming environment for the group, with legendary pizza to boot.

Just some ideas, thought I'd throw 'em out there...

Personally I think Chuy's is a little overrated. I don't have a problem with it but Maudie's is my personal favorite. There aren't however, any very close to downtown.

If Hut's is close to your lecture than Waterloo Ice House might be a good choice too.

Speaking of your lecture, how might I go about attending?

Hey Rev...I think you can just show up; it's the monthly meeting of the Austin Photography Group, which is a group anyone can join as I understand. It's at 7:00 on the 3rd floor of a place called "Book People" at 6th & Lamar. It'll be there regular monthly meeting, with me as the guest speaker for the night.

As for Chuy's, it's not my favorite Mexican place either, but it's probably the one Austin is best known for...their biggest Mexican export anyway.

Also...not that anyone really is, but don't worry about picking a place to close to where I've gotta be later. I've got a car and can get around town as needed. For that matter, I'm not even sure I'll be able to get down to Austin by 1 pm.

Hopefully if you can't join us for food you'll at least make it in time to come exploring a bit with us! I totally forgot that I'm starting belly dancing lessons this week, so I'll have to take off around 6pm, but I'll at least be good to traipse about for a few hours.

How about we do Hut's Hamburgers for food? Can't go wrong with burgers (unless there are any vegetarians in the group...) and according to their site they are good for group dining and they are cheap.

Any objections?

I think Hut's is a great call. I think I'll be able to make the lunch thing, don't know if I'll be able to stay for exploring...poking around down under the bat bridges sounds like a good way to get hot & sweaty, i.e., not the condition I need to be in if I'm gonna make a presentation later!

Well, cheap for downtown.

Under 10 bucks for a good burger joint is cheap enough, even freakin Wendy's is 7 and some change for a combo.

Until the location is established, you might want to put a default location in the event listing. Otherwise, the UER Event System won't send out the automatic reminder tomorrow for folks that are in the area. You can see what I'm talking about if you go to the Events link -- it includes a "Distance" column, which currently shows a rather large number (probably the Great Circle distance to 0 latitude, 0 longitude).

Thanks Robert! I went ahead and put Hut's into the google map on the page so hopefully that will fix it.

I'll probably show up a few minutes early, I've only met Rev before, so I'm not sure what anyone else looks like. Luckily I'm easy to pick out, I've currently got blue, turquoise and pink/purple hair, and a fair number of tattoos.

And a reminder link in case people want to RSVP who haven't

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear you can't make it out, SS! Well, hopefully we can make this a semi-regular thing and you will be able to make the next one!

It was great seeing everyone who was able to make it out today! I think we got a pretty good turn out for our first time (8 in all). I'm thinking we should maybe start doing this on a semi-regular basis, on weekends different from the DFW m-n-g so that there can be some cross-over if the chance ever arises.

The drains were good as well, and one person even managed to make it through without slipping at all! Yay!
