Details
MARITIME MEET-UP: AUGUST 2-3, 2014

(Rain date: August 9-10, 2014)

SUMMARY:
We're holding a two-day long, overnight event, centered around our rich military history and the remains it's left in our area.
It will feature a day long tour of prominent military locations in the Halifax area.

Check out the ongoing forum thread which talks about the Halifax Defense Complex (full members only).

The first day will end with an overnight trip to McNab's Island, which had played an important role in Halifax's defense for almost 200 years.
Our campsite will be set up directly in an abandoned gun battery. The second day will be exploring the Island in detail.

IMPORTANT:
Some of the locations we will be viewing will involve trespassing, especially on the first day.
Join in at your own risk.

AGENDA
The agenda right now is a bit loose, and some events may be changed/omitted based on the availability and accessibility of the location.

Saturday August 2
9am-10am:
Meet up at the Ardmore Tea room on Quinpool Road ( Google Maps ) - enjoy breakfast and/or coffee - double check everyone is properly prepared.
10am-5pm:
Explore the Halifax Defense Complex. Somewhere in here (2pm maybe) will be a lunch/snack/coffee break of about 45min duration.
5pm-7pm:
Go to Eastern Passage, travel to McNab's, set up camp.
7pm onward:
Relax and Socialize. Probably eat food. Explore a bit in the dark?

Sleep on McNab's Island

Sunday August 3
9am-10am:
Breakfast (take down camp?), explore.
10am-5pm:
Explore. Somewhere in here (1pm maybe) will be a lunch/snack/coffee break.
5pm-6pm:
Go back to mainland, say our goodbyes.

THINGS TO KNOW:
- You are free to come and go as you please, and do not have to commit to the entire trip.

- The round-trip fare to McNab's Island is $20. Show up with cash in hand. If there are enough of us, we might be able to arrange a group rate.

- This is an overnight camping trip:
You will need some equipment: a sleeping bag and air mattress at the least. You can sleep inside one of the buildings if you don't want to bring a tent.
You will also need food for 2-3 meals. We will be eating on the night of the 2nd, breakfast on the 3rd, and lunch on the 3rd. These can be as simple or as elaborate as you have the ability to create.

- VERY IMPORTANT: *THERE IS NO RUNNING WATER ON MCNAB'S ISLAND.*
You have to bring your own water, or some sort of water-purifying system with you. If you're bringing water, it's going to be heavy. And you'll need a lot of it if you're going to be walking around exploring in early August. Consider this when packing your gear.

- Officially, McNab's Island is an alcohol and drug free location. However, I'm not your mother, and I'm not a cop. I won't be checking you at the door, and neither will anyone else when you're there.

- There's no significant risk to any of the locations we'll visit, but it's better to be prepared. You should have a name and phone number for an emergency contact written down, and if you have first-aid experience please let us know.

I encourage everyone to view the forum thread that has created this event (full members only).

There will be a camping checklist on the forum thread in the near future, and further discussion about the details of the event. Check it out and give your input.

I hope to see you there!
